It Is Never a Dull Moment
In the last two weeks, we have been close to going to the emergency room twice for the most unusual of reasons.
Last night while reading scriptures, Max stuck a wooden neckerchief slide on one of his fingers and promptly got it stuck. He was pretty calm about it, and didn't even say anything to us. Jacey noticed the problem first, and let us know. I don't know how long he would have gone before he told us. My first thought was to run his hand under cold water to shrink his finger, but Gregg reminded me that the wood would swell, and get even tighter.
After our first initial efforts failed, we determined the best way to get it off was to try to cut it off with a dremmell. While trying to figure out which tip would be the best to use and the angle of the cut, we placed Max's hand in a bowl of ice. I stayed with Max to calmly explain to him what we were going to try and how we were going to get it off. I also cautioned him that the dremmell might cut him or burn him, and he needed to tell us immediately when he felt it. This freaked him out and was determined to get the slide off by himself. Which after much freaking out he did.
The second event happened a week and a half ago. Jacey while eating dinner one night stood up and excused herself from the table to go to the bathroom. A few minutes later, she made a few weird noises, and we asked her if she was all right. She responded that she didn't feel well. She laid down on the couch, but that made her feel worse. So she came back to the table. Her not feeling well came on so sudden, and other than feeling like she needed to throw up, she felt fine. I decided she didn't need me hovering, but kept checking on her. During one of my checks, she told me her chest and her back hurt. That was not right. Usually if you are sick, your stomach hurts. So we started analyzing what happened. We finally figured out she was choking. That is certainly not how the text books describe choking. I was stumped. She was not coughing or wheezing. She could breath just fine. We tried flushing it down with water, we tried hitting her on the back, and we tried the heimlich, but nothing worked. I called a couple of friends that are nurses to ask what we should do, and was told to take her to an InstaCare or to an emergency room. That made Jacey feel stupid and nervous so she asked for a blessing from her dad. Gregg gave her a blessing and within 10 minutes Jacey threw up and was fine. It freaked us all out.
The next day, she complained of a sore throat and abdominal pain. Really Princess? How do you think your body is going to feel after having the heimlich done to you? Not once , but three times. Go figure?
She is still super embarrassed about it, but took it all in good stride when the husband of one of the nurses I called brought by goodies to rub it in. In his card he congratulated her on passing Heimlich 101, and stated, "I knew you had it IN you." It was pretty funny.
Side Note: When these neighbors moved to the neighborhood, they moved in during election time and John Swallow was running for a political office. Brett would make the joke that everyone was so nice that they even reminded him to swallow. He became Jacey's Sunday School teacher and Jacey thought it was funny. So when the elections were over, Jacey made him a sign of his own that said, "Don't forget to Swallow." Too bad he threw the sign away.
